We here at Monte Cook Games are excited to announce the launch of Cypher Tools—a suite of free online tools that make running and playing the Cypher System even easier and more convenient. As a publisher of some of the world’s most innovative and easy-to-use tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs), we couldn’t be more thrilled to provide, in partnership with Furious Collective, this asset for playing and running Cypher System games.
At the heart of the Cypher Tools suite lies the Character Builder, a world-class tool for creating and managing TTRPG characters for the Cypher System. The free Character Builder offers three ways to create Cypher System characters:
- Use the easy step-by-step guide through the character generation process. You can make a character in minutes, for virtually any genre!
- If you like to roll up your sleeves, an unguided option lets you build characters however you like.
- Found an online game you want to join, but you need a character right now? Take a short survey about your genre and character preferences to point you to the perfect option drawn from an immense library of pregenerated characters.
Regardless of the method you prefer, you’ll find a best-in-class experience that works smoothly, quickly, and efficiently.
Once your character is made, you can store it within the Character Builder to access it later. You can advance and modify your character at any time.
When you’re ready to play, you have multiple options for accessing and using your character.
- Export your character to a form-fillable PDF. Use it for online play, or on a device during an in-person game. Or print it out and take it to your game table!
- Use the character straight from the Character Builder. Whether you’re playing online, or with a laptop or other device in an in-person game, you can update pools, cyphers, equipment, and other character information directly in the Character Builder during play.
- Export your character to a VTT. The Character Builder will launch with support for The Foundry, with a Roll20 export feature soon to follow.
Through the Character Builder, players can generate Cypher System characters for any genre, drawing on character options from the Cypher System Rulebook and a full range of major Cypher System supplements. A player creating a superhero will find descriptors, foci, and other character options from Claim the Sky, while a fantasy character can include elements from Godforsaken, and a character for a sci-fi game can draw from The Stars Are Fire. The entire line of Cypher System genre supplements is included—even the recently released Rust and Redemption will be included shortly after launch.
Other handy items in the Cypher Tools suite include the Creature Index, a useful tool for GMs building exciting Cypher System encounters. By selecting criteria such as level, environment, and motivation, the GM can identify creatures perfect for their encounters from across the entire spectrum of MCG publications. Even creatures from the forthcoming Cypher System Bestiary (releasing in April) are included!
Players and GMs trying to decide among the many options available for Cypher System campaigns can turn to the Setting Finder. While the Cypher System supports virtually any setting, adventure, or character players can imagine straight out of the Cypher System Rulebook, the wide array of available genre and setting books provide additional support and an expanded range of options. The Setting Finder helps players discover the titles that will best support their vision.
Additional tools and features are already in the works. The Cypher Tools suite will grow rapidly throughout 2024 and beyond with even more useful options for Cypher System players.
